An integrated, eco-friendly sanitation and waste management system is possible through a combination of innovative approaches. This project’s design reflects the experience gained from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction grants and other donor and government initiatives incorporating innovative best practices in eco-friendly and integrated onsite sanitation and waste management system. These practices include (i) a multisector approach that addresses the linked issues of sanitation, livability, and conservation; (ii) the combination of structural and nonstructural measures for climate resilience and cost-effective onsite sanitation and waste management; and (iii) sustained capacity building and multi-stakeholder participation, training, and advocacy, focusing on the lead role of women for local initiatives. Successful implementation of the project demonstrates the viability of these best practices even under differing traditions and cultural values across the globe.
