Incorporation of experiences and lessons from local and global good practices strengthens the design of projects. This project especially benefitted from widely applicable lessons in disaster risk management (DRM) and poverty reduction, which overall showed the importance of the following key elements in effective DRM (i) putting in place a mechanism to involve all key stakeholders in voluntary action to address DRM; (ii) formation of local groups, such as the project's bagh neighborhood groups (BNG), to link vulnerable communities with formal administrative structures and thereby influence DRM plans and programs; (iii) shifting the focus from disaster response toward a more holistic disaster risk reduction (DRR) approach; and (iv) adequate support especially to address the needs of national and local governments and communities for DRR funds and equipment, including the provisionof improved shelter and food storage infrastructure to protect livestock during dzuds. The design of the project was technically sound; and the project administration manual was well thought-through and researched.
