CAREC Transport Corridor I (Bishkek-Torugart Road) Project 2

The combination of high altitude, low temperatures during winter and frozen ground beneath the project road resulted in the appearance of frost heave cracks. Cracks have been filled in with bitumen but will reappear after each winter. The cracking issue needs to be monitored on an ongoing basis with cracks filled in as they appear. To minimize risk of further cracking, snow needs to be removed entirely from the roadbed and not merely left on shoulders, and weight limits for goods vehicles need to be strictly enforced to ensure undue stress is not placed on the project road.
